Tegan Wallace and Chad Lindhorst  and all of ther people attending their wedding at the Washington Park Arboretum Meadow in October. Afterwards everyone headed over to  Blue Ribbon Cooking, for the reception. It was a great day and it did not rain until well after the reception was underway which was a good thing because they did not have a backup plan for the ceremony at the Arboretum. Ann Krembs and Mark Casey had a DeLille Cellars Wedding, in Woodenville last summer.  DeLILLE CELLARS  is one of my favorite place for an outdoor wedding and one of the reasons is this pond which reflects very nicely when people stand alongside it. This is what we did right after Ann and Mark’s wedding ceremony. Other features of the grounds there are the sheep grazing in the field behind the people above.

Wes “Warm Daddy” Anderson at Tula’s Monday

Earshot Jazz Festival 2011 presented a special jazz lesson from soulful, searing alto saxophonist Wessell “Warm Daddy” Anderson, with Phill Sparks on bass, Bill Anschell, piano and D’Vonne Lewis, drums.

A former member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and charter member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, alto saxophonist Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson blends traditional jazz, some bebop and swinging sounds in a blues-inflected style that has drawn flattering comparisons to Cannonball Adderley. For over a decade and a half, he was part of Marsalis’ efforts at Jazz at Lincoln Center, but he left in 2006 to join the jazz faculty at Michigan State University.

“Always one of the most popular members of Jazz at Lincoln Center, many fans of the venerable institution were saddened to hear about Anderson’s stroke in 2007. Following the stroke, much of the left side of his body was numb, and many speculated as to whether he would play again. Musicians who knew Anderson well, however, were not surprised when he returned triumphantly to the bandstand after just a few months.”

“is 2010 return to a New York stage at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola was applauded by fans and critics alike. Nate Chinen, reviewing the outing in the New York Times, wrote: “And how did he sound? Excellent, unchanged. His mellow, sweet-tart tone was a physical presence, and he gave it plenty of air, often holding a note for a long stretch, then taking a breath and modulating to another one … In his alto style, there’s no chasm between the chivalrous croon of Johnny Hodges and the roguish charisma of Charlie Parker.”

“Born into a musical family in Brooklyn, Anderson played piano from an early age, starting to study classical music when he was 12. However, two years later he switched genres and instruments. His father, a drummer, had worked with Cecil Payne and directed his son towards jazz. Hearing records by Charlie Parker prompted the shift from piano to alto saxophone. Anderson studied with various teachers, including several he met through the Jazzmobile workshops.

“In 1983, he was heard by Branford Marsalis, who urged him to pursue his studies, this time under Alvin Batiste. Five years later, Anderson joined Wynton Marsalis’ band, touring internationally, with the corresponding gain in reputation and audience awareness that this brought about. Anderson, who also plays soprano and sopranino saxophones, has also worked with Betty Carter, Ted Nash, Marc Cary, Victor Goines and many others. For this concert, he is joined by Seattle’s top sidemen.”

Jennifer and Polachi Sakchalathorn were married on the first Saturday in September at the beautiful orchard at the Farm Kitchen, an 18-acre organic farm near Poulsbo.  Jennifer and Polachai were lucky that the weather was warm and sunny  and so were the smiles. Polachai is from Thailand, known to travelers to Southeast Asia as the Land of Smiles. East Meets West. Deep in Love. Hard to settle on a title for their wedding day. 

Jennifer was glowing in her beautiful wedding dress that looked like a cloud.

Jennifer and Polachai celebrated their marriage with a ceremony that incorporated part western ceremony and part Buddhist wedding ceremony. The Thai traditional water ceremony, (or in Thai, Rod Nam Sang) which involved the bride and groom sitting side by side at a special table. Then their family and guests, led by the most respected elders, had the opportunity to bestow their individual blessings. They did this, one by one, by gently pouring water from a conch shell over the hands of the couple. The water passes through the hands of the bride and groom and into a bowl filled with flowers, (typically lotus flowers which symbolize fertility) beneath. It was serene and evocative mixing the  Buddhist wedding ceremony with the western ceremony. Annemarie Juhlian was the wedding officiant who melded the two cultures together with ease.

After some pictures and a fine dinner, Jennifer and Polachai danced a lot to some great live music. However, it was Jennifer’s grandfather who seemed to be out on the dance floor more than anyone. Whenever I looked, he was dancing with a different partner. He really knows how to move.

Here are some highlights from a wonderful wedding on a beautiful day.

Jennifer’s unique bouquet and other flowers were by the amazing Rebecca Slattery of Persephone Farms.  The reception had everyone out on the dance floor dancing to the awesome swing band JAVATOWN SWING ORCHESTRA lead by the talented Seattle vocalist, trumpet player and band leader Jake Bergevin.  Essence of the Thymes provided the wonderful catering. They really know how to cook. Krista Herman of Wishes Weddings & Events helped plan their wedding day for them. Monica Frisell assisted as my second photographer.  I photographed  Molly 2 years ago when she was 9 months pregnant on a Sunday afternoon.Two days later baby Harper popped out of the belly and into the world. Although I have photographed her a couple of times I wanted to post an update now that she just turned two. Harper loves playing “Where’s the baby” with me. What a sweet child.

Kristine and Steve had a lovely intimate wedding with a small number of family and friends in attendance at Snoqualmie Falls and Salish Lodge & Spa, one of the most romantic destination wedding locations in the Seattle area   It was a late afternoon wedding on a terrace overlooking the Falls and although there had been some grey skies mid day the sun began to burn through the mist over the falls and light up the hill sides above the falls and river. Here a few selected pictures to preview what will come after editing and processing all of them. This next one below they are holding hands but did not see each other.  It was not until after Kristin walked out onto the terrace that Steve saw her for the first time.

Last week I got a ca ll from George Carofino who told me he was looking for someone to take a family portrait of his son Brad’s family for a Christmas present. The day he selected was this beautiful sunny December before Christmas. Brad and his wife Katy lived very close to Carkeek Park so Jana and I went down and it was wonderful filtered sunlight up on the bluff and after some group pictures we went down to the beach. As I started shooting down there the clouds parted and it started getting warm What a day. Here are a few of the highlights of Brad and Katy’s family with Brad’s father and mother George and Dianne. 

The Tyee Yacht Club  also known as The Yacht Club on Lake Union was the scene of the wedding ceremony and reception of Judah Stevenson and Sarah Hess.   Sarah and Judah are such a creative, thoughtful and beautiful couple. The wedding was great. So too was the fabulous food provided by Ravishing Radish Catering. in fact The Yacht Club on Lake Union is the home of Ravishing Radish Catering so that was not a surprise. Sarah and Judah made their getaway as their friends and family looked on at the end of their wedding reception cruising to the The Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland via the “Seneca” a 38 foot, 1958 Chris Craft. Below are some of the highlights of their wedding. I love the low intensity light over Puget Sound outside the office window of Dean Bennion, an executive at the Wells Fargo Bank with the Olympic Mountains off hidden in the clouds. Rain was falling over most of the distant mountain skyline except for off in the southern end of the Olympics, the sun was trying to get through under the clouds. A grand vista from 40 floors over Elliot Bay.
